What to Expect
The Council on Podiatric Medicine outlines guidelines on the amount
of foot and ankle surgery required for completion of a Podiatric Surgery
Residency. Here at The Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati surgical numbers
far exceed the minimum requirements. Despite the magnitude of surgical
cases, the quality of surgical, hands-on training remains the focus.
All aspects of foot and ankle surgery are taught including pediatrics,
diabetic limb salvage, foot and ankle trauma, skeletal external fixation,
forefoot and rearfoot surgery and reconstruction. The Jewish Hospital
of Cincinnati is a teaching hospital with teaching services for internal
medicine and general surgery residents. A significant portion of training
comes not only from the podiatric physicians but also from orthopedic,
vascular, general, and plastic surgeons.
In the past, graduating residents have averaged 1,000 – 2,000
foot and ankle procedures during their three years of training. The Director of Podiatric Medical Education at Jewish Hospital is Cary L. Copeland, DPM, FACFAS.
