Surgical Grand Rounds/Core Curriculum top of page

This conference is held Monday afternoon from September to June and is moderated and coordinated by Dr. Elliott J. Fegelman. Each session may include one or more case presentations followed by a didactic lecture covering a topic pertaining to the case presented. Topics should include surgical anatomy, physiology, pathology, surgical history, pharmacology and nutrition as they relate to the presentation. This academic session will be prepared by a resident, faculty or visiting professor. All residents are required to present at least one Grand Rounds each year.

Basic Science Conference top of page

This weekly conference is held each Monday afternoon. It is coordinated by the Attending Staff under the direction of Dr. Cari Ogg and run by the two chief residents. Topics such as cardiology, fluid and electrolytes balance, acid-base, vascular surgery, gastrointestinal disease, and endocrinology are covered in order to prepare the residents for ABSITE issues and board examinations. Schwartz' Principles of Surgery, along with other tutorials, is used as the foundation for this conference.

Practice Based Learning Enviroment Conference top of page
(Morbidity And Mortality Conference)

Coordinated by Dr. Elliott J. Fegelman, this conference, held on Monday afternoon, precedes Grand Rounds, which is made up of case presentations followed by discussion pertinent to those cases. Topics include operative complications and problems in wound healing, shock and circulatory physiology, fluid and electrolyte balance, metabolic response to injury and surgical nutrition. The resident who participated in the patient’s care is responsible for preparing complications for the conference. Residents are strongly encouraged to bring recent data/literature that may illustrate an improvement and/or current therapy.

Chairman Rounds top of page

This weekly conference is held on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. and is coordinated by Dr. Elliott J. Fegelman and the general surgery faculty. The surgical residents present surgical cases to the attending faculty. In-depth discussion and pertinent radiographs are incorporated along with floor rounds. The topics each week are at the discretion of the chief residents.

Attending Lectures top of page

This conference is held monthly on Wednesday mornings. Topics are presented and discussed with staff. Residents are expected to be prepared by pre-reading the assigned chapters from Schwartz or material provided by staff prior to conference.

Cancer Conference top of page

This conference is held on the 1st and 4th Wednesday mornings of the month. Topics include breast and current cancer case(s) of the month. This conference is attended by radiology, oncology, pathology and surgery attendings. This conference allows for a multi disciplinary discussion on current cancer therapies.

Journal Club top of page

Four or five papers are assigned monthly to the residents. At the conferences, coordinated by Dr. Martin Popp, the papers are presented by the residents and discussed. This conference is held on Thursdays in the afternoon.

Research Methodology top of page

This conference which is held quarterly and is coordinated by Drs. Cari Ogg and Elliott J. Fegelman and is run by Ms. Liz Fannin. During this conference Ms. Fannin meets with the residents and attending faculty to discuss preparations, statistical analysis, and manuscript development.

Risk Management Conference top of page

This conference, which is held annually, is led by Julie Clark, R.N., director of risk management. During this conference, residents discuss topics on ethics, practice management and medical-legal issues.

Cincinnati Surgical Society top of page

This meeting is held once a quarter at Kingsgate Conference Center at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. It features visiting professors of surgery from prominent medical centers and institutions throughout the United States and Canada. This meeting is an opportunity for surgical residents from all three of the training programs in Cincinnati to mingle and interface with faculty and program staff.

Vascular Surgery Conference top of page

Vascular conference is held on one Wednesday morning per month. This conference schedule was developed by Dr. Charles Mesh and it allows for a major vascular text to be read and discussed on a two-year cycle.

Research Projects top of page

Residents, as a PGY-1, are asked to develop topics and ideas for a research project. PGY-2 residents are to design/develop their chosen project and complete data gathering. As a PGY-3, residents should compose a written paper for submission of data to a journal. During PGY-3, 4, & 5, residents are strongly encouraged to work with attending staff and write-up ongoing clinical research for presentation/publication.
