Cardiology top of page

The cardiology department is usually the first stop on the path to heart care. This is where many of the tests and screenings are done to determine if you have a heart problem. Services offered by our cardiology department include:

  • EKG
  • Stress test
  • Echocardiograms
  • Holter and Event Monitors

Catheterization labs top of page

The cardiac catheterization labs are used to diagnose blocked heart arteries, and often to open the arteries without the need for surgery.

Our team of interventional cardiologists, nurses and technicians perform thousands of these procedures every year.

Patients in the cath lab may receive an angiogram, which is a test that displays the blocked artery. If possible, the cardiologist will open the artery with balloon angioplasty and often one or more stents (tiny spring-like devices implanted in the artery to keep the blood flow clear).

Electrophysiology lab top of page

Cardiac catheterization is sort of like plumbing for the heart, removing any clogs in the very important “pipes” (arteries) that flow through the heart. The electrophysiology lab is used to fix electrical problems of the heart. The heart is surrounded by an electrical field that keeps the beat going at the right pace. Sometimes, the electricity fails to do its job right, and an irregular heartbeat can occur.

For those problems, our expert electrophysiology team is ready to help. The EP lab is used to diagnose and treat these problems, often with devices such as pacemakers or implantable cardiac defibrillators.

Open-heart surgery top of page

Sometimes, the best way to fix a cardiovascular problem is through surgery. That’s why we’re proud to be among the most experienced open-heart teams in the region.

When we designed our open heart surgery unit, it was done with careful forethought and planning. The operating rooms are next to the open heart recovery room and cardiovascular stepdown unit, which means all of our services are centrally located in one area. That eliminates the need to move you to different floors or wings of the hospital.

In open heart surgery, our cardiovascular, vascular and cardiothoracic surgeons can clear blocked arteries and veins, replace heart valves and much more.

After surgery, you’ll be taken to open heart recovery until you’re ready to move to your room on the cardiovascular step down unit. Throughout this time, the surgeon and staff will keep your family and visitors informed of your progress.

Vascular lab top of page

Vascular diseases affect the veins and arteries of the body. They can be serious, such as an abdominal aortic aneurysm that requires vascular surgery. Or it may be a simpler blockage in a vein that can be treated in the vascular lab.

Our vascular experts provide an accurate assessment of your needs. Testing done in our vascular lab can provide valuable information for your physician to determine that you need medication or surgery as a next step.

Cardiac Rehabilitation top of page

The Jewish Hospital was the first in the Tri-state to establish a cardiac rehabilitation program. The cardiac rehabilitation program helps cardiac patients lead better, healthier lives through education and exercise. The program is staffed by cardiac nurses, dietitians and exercise specialists. They provide direction and support in exercise, low-fat diets, stress reduction, smoking cessation and other healthful practices. Programs are customized to meet the needs of each patient. The cardiac rehabilitation program is for patients recovering from coronary bypass surgery, angina (chest pain), angioplasty and heart attacks. It's also beneficial for patients dealing with circulation problems, diabetes, lung problems and valve disorders.

There are three phases for cardiac rehabilitation, and Jewish Hospital offers all of them. That means we’re experienced in every aspect of helping you heal your heart, and we’ll continue to be your partners in care every step of the way.

Phase One of cardiac rehab is completed while you’re in the hospital. Depending on the type of procedure you had, you’ll be visited by our cardiac rehab experts right in your room, as they work with you to get you back on your feet.

Phase Two & Three of cardiac rehab is offered just down the street from the hospital, in a conveniently located building at 6350 East Galbraith Road. With front door parking, fitness equipment and a staff of experts, you’ll receive the perfect combination of convenience and expertise.
