Joint Replacement Center

Computer-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery

The Jewish Hospital, an international leader in computer assisted orthopedic surgery, is home to the world’s first operating room dedicated to this sophisticated technique.

What is computer-assisted surgery?

Computer-assisted surgery, or CAS, is surgery performed with the aid of computers. The surgeon is in control, but uses the computer’s assistance to make the surgery more precise and get the best fit for the new knee or hip.

How is computer-assisted surgery used to perform joint replacements?

A computer-assisted surgery operating room has computer equipment that enables orthopedic surgeons to use guidance or navigation for total joint replacement. Guidance systems are comprised of tracking devices and cameras that feed data about the patient into a computer. The computer then creates a model on the screen of the patient’s bones during the surgery, and provides the surgeon with information about the correct position of the new joints. It can be compared to using a GPS system for surgery: it tells the surgeon exactly where he or she is operating, and helps him or her plan the next steps.

What are the benefits to patients?

The goal of Jewish Hospital and your surgeon is to get you back to doing the activities you enjoy, pain-free. Computer-assisted orthopedic surgery provides a better fit for the new hip or knee joint. There are also small incisions, few blood transfusions and fast healing.

Why is Jewish Hospital considered a leader in the field of computer-assisted orthopedic surgery?

Jewish Hospital performs more computer-assisted total joint replacement surgeries than any other hospital in the world. Jewish Hospital performs more hip and knee replacement surgeries than any other hospital in the Greater Cincinnati area. In addition, Jewish Hospital was also the first in the USA to offer this for knee replacement patients.
